It used to be that anyone who loved country and western music was automatically suspicious of a high-toned woman with Dior clothes (which Dolly Parton does wear) and elaborate hair-dos (ditto) and stage presence (which Dolly has had since she was eleven.) You've got to remember that the city-fied slickeress is one of the archfiends in country songs; bright lights, blonde bombshells and big city ways are the country wife's most real enemy. All of which made it doubly hard for a girl like Dolly Parton - who just doesn't happen to look like anybody who ever lived next door to us!

When this stunning little (5'1") traffic-stopper got her big break on Porter Wagoner's TV series, she also got her first lesson in pop prejudice. You see, she replaced perky, popular Norma Jean, a long-time veteran of the show, and fans first seemed to resent this dazzling humdinger of a singer. "It was murder knowin' that everybody was want-in' to see and hear someone else," Dolly recalls.

Some people may not believe that Dolly stays home nights putting her dreams to earthy back-home melodies, or that she got most of her education-musical and moral-in her grandfather's church. Some may not think, just to see her, that she's a totally sincere, deeply religious, ardently reverent workhorse of a person whose profits go mostly to charity.
