Dom DeLuise

TV, movie, stage funnyman, dies
By Jim Cheng USA TODAY

Dom DeLuise, whose smiling face and portly physique were familiar on film, TV, and Broadway, died Monday. He was 75.
His son, actor Michael DeLuise, said Tuesday that his father died in his sleep after a long illness.
DeLuise, who for years fought a highly public battle with his weight, found a second career as a chef and wrote two cookbooks.
The prolific actor, who began in stage productions, boasted a long resume of movies, TV shows and cartoon voice work.
On the big screen, DeLuise was a regular in Mel Brooks comedies, including The Twelve Chairs, Blazing Saddles, and Silent Movie.
The actor also appeared frequently alongside his good friend Burt Reynolds in such films as The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and The Cannonball Run.
"I was dreading this moment," Reynolds said in a statement Tuesday. "Dom always made you feel better when he was around, and there will never be another like him. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. I will miss him very much."
DeLuise was a fixture on TV in the 1960s and '70s, appearing on variety shows and as a regular with Carol Burnett in The Entertainers. He landed his own short-lived sitcom, Lotsa Luck, in 1973.
"To know Dom was to love him, and I knew him very well," Burnett said. "He was a very special human being."
DeLuise's TV credits included The Munsters, The Girl From U.N.C.L.E., Burke's Law, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Diagnosis Murder.
On Broadway, DeLuise appeared in Neil Simon's Last of the Red Hot Lovers and other plays.
The actor battled obesity throughout his life. In 1993, in need of a hip replacement, DeLuise lost 100 pounds so he could have surgery.
DeLuise was appearing on Broadway in Here's Love in the early 1960s when he was hired to appear on The Garry Moore Show. That led to Hollywood, where he first made a mark in Hollywood in the drama Fail Safe, starring Henry Fonda, and the comedy The Glass Bottom Boat, starring Doris Day.
"I loved him from the moment we met," Day said Tuesday. "Not only did we have the greatest time working together, but I never laughed so hard in my life as when we were together."
Born in New York City to Italian immigrants, Deluise stayed true to his humble beginnings.
"I was making $7,000 a week - a lot of money back then," he once said of his early work in film. "But I didn't even know I was rich. I was just having such a great time."
His three sons, Peter, Michael, and David, became actors and appeared with their father in the 1990s TV series SeaQuestDSV, in which Peter and Michael were regulars. David DeLuise is one of the co-stars of Disney's hit children's series Wizards of Waverly Place.

"To know Dom was to love him": The Hollywood fixture, 75, also was known for his cookbooks.
