At the height of his record career, in the middle Fifties, Eddie Fisher had twenty-one big hits in a row - at that time an unheard of achievement. These were single records, which sold in the neighborhood of three-quarter of a million to well over a million each. He was forever on top of the "most played by disc jockeys" charts; he had his own high-rated NBC network television show; and, wherever he went, he drew huge masses of frenzied fans. His total audience in these peak years had to be numbered in the many millions: ten million, fifteen million, twenty million is probably not too high. Eddie Fisher was one of those few in entertainment history who achieved that stature known as "idol."
The reason for this phenomenal appeal was certainly not what is called a magnetic or driving personality, for Eddie, even then, was a shy kid with a habit in a first-name business of calling everybody "Mister." The appeal was in the incredible lyric sweetness of his baritone voice. Eddie didn't "swing," didn't push to sell a song; he simply threw back his head, swung his arms wide, and belted out a ballad. Anytime, I'm Walking Behind You, Wish You Were Here, Oh! My Pa-Pa, I Need You Now, all glittered on the wall of his Manhattan Hampshire House apartment as gold record plaques denoting million-sellers.
