She retired from acting in 2003, having won two Best Actress Oscars for Butterfield 8 (1960) and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)
• She was the first actress to earn $1 million for a single movie, Cleopatra (1963), a role requiring a record 65 costume changes. It was also on this set where she met Richard Burton, whom she later married and divorced twice
