- The Taylor family moved to Los Angeles in 1939 when Elizabeth was seven years old and she made her screen debut only three years later, in National Velvet (1944). She retired from acting in 2003, having won two Best Actress Oscars for Butterfield 8 (1960) and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)
- She was the first actress to earn $1 million for a single movie, Cleopatra (1963), a role requiring a record 65 costume changes. It was also on this set where she met Richard Burton, whom she later married and divorced twice
