The Best Of
One of the best pop singers from the early 1940s and 1950s, Dick Haymes' warm baritone earned him many important star roles in musical movies in the 1940s. Trained by his mother who was a concert singer, Haymes' family traveled in many countries finally settling in New York and later California. In his mid-teens he sang summers with Johnny Johnsons' band in the east.
In Hollywood he tried songwriting, sang on the radio, performed in movies and was granted occasional bits in vaudeville or stock companies. While trying to sell his songs to band leader Harry James, Dick Haymes was hired as a vocalist. While performing with James in 1940 and 1941, Dick Haymes first attained prominence. He performed with Benny Goodman in 1942 and toured with Tommy Dorsey in 1943. It was during this year that Haymes' success rivaled Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra when he recorded his biggest selling record, "Little White Lies."
Haymes attained real stardom in 1944 when he starred in the movie Irish Eyes Are Smiling portraying composer Ernest R. Ball. Though his later years have seen personal trouble and turmoil, Dick Haymes will remain a bright star passing over the turntables and across movie screens and into history as one of the biggest singing stars of the 1940s.
