I became an artist, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.
  • Raised in Central Falls, Rhode Island, Viola Davis began performing in school productions and theatre competitions. She graduated from the prestigious Juilliard School in 1994.
  • Starring as a reserved maid during the Civil Rights Era, the 2011 film The Help, Davis received high praise for her performance and was nominated for both an Oscar and Golden Globe, which helped establish Davis as a household name.
  • Recognized by critics and peers as a versatile and nuanced actor, she is one of the few performers in history to receive an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award, also known as EGOT. Davis won an Emmy for her role in the television series How to Get Away with Murder in 2015, a Grammy for narration of her memoir Finding Me in 2023, an Oscar for her performance in Fences in 2017, and a Tony each for King Hedley II and Fences in 2001 and 2010, respectively.
  • Some of Davis' other notable work includes Widows (2018), Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020), The Woman King (2022), and Air (2023).
  • Davis is the first Black woman to receive an Academy Award, Emmy Award, and Tony Award all in acting categories, a respected honor known as the Triple Crown of Acting.
