Jackie Gleason
Fans pay respects to Gleason
Many travel miles to say thanks for the laughter
AP and UPI
NORTH MIAMI, Fla. Friends from the entertainment world and fans from all walks of life came Friday to mourn comic giant Jackie Gleason. More than 1,000 mourners from celebrities to the little people Gleason pitched his entertainment to filed past his closed casket a day before a private funeral. He died Wednesday at 71 in his Florida home. Gleason's widow, Marilyn, and her sister, choreographer June Taylor, left in black limousines just before the doors were opened to waiting fans. Also present were his daughters, Linda and Geraldine.
THE CASKET was set on a small podium in front of two rows of pews. Most people walked quickly past the bier, although some sat for a time. "It was our way of saying thanks, said retired Jesse Warriner, who came with his wife, Julia, from Sanford, Fla. They woke up at 3:30 a.m. to drive across the state to honor the memory of a favorite entertainer. "We watched him when he started out," said Warriner. "He was the greatest."
MARY ANTONELLIS, 73, of Davie, said she had to change buses five times en route from her Broward County home. She said she planned to remain until the doors closed at 9 p.m. "At times I said to myself, he must have had some heartaches," she said. "We have a saying in Italian that everyone in the street must carry a cross, but they do not always show it.
"I think that's the type of man that he was." Cheryl Wengel, 26, of Chicago, interrupted her vacation to pay her respects.
DAVE GIORDANO of New York City and his friend, Jerry Conway of Wilton Manors, Fla., recalled some famous Honeymooners sketches as they waited to enter. "He was the only man I could watch and hear the same jokes over and over and over again and laugh just as hard every time," Giordano said. "It was the ultimate in sitcoms, the same people in the same outfits day in and day out. No frills. No slapstick."
Gleason was a successful bandleader and composer who couldn't read music, a Broadway dramatic film actor nominated for an Oscar. But, most memorably, he was bus driver Ralph Kramden in The Honeymooners.
GLEASON WAS released last week from Imperial Point Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he underwent treatment for colon cancer that also involved his liver. He had triple-bypass heart surgery in 1978 and suffered from emphysema and diabetes but did little to curtail his flamboyant life-style. Gleason wouldn't let news of his bout with cancer be reported. "He enjoyed making people laugh too much to do that," said June Taylor, leader of the dance troupe on his TV variety show.
An invitation-only funeral mass is scheduled for today at St. Mary's Cathedral in Miami. Gleason's family declined to release the guest list.
Although Gleason was divorced twice, he is entitled to a Roman Catholic burial, said the chancellor of the Miami archdiocese.
