- Dancer, singer, musician, actor, and choreographer Fred Astaire is seen as one of Hollywood's true legends. Best known for his partnership with Ginger Rogers, together they made ten films including Top Hat (1935), Shall We Dance (1937) and Carefree (1938)
- Astaire received an honorary Academy Award for his unique artistry and his contributions to the technique of musical pictures and in 1981 was awarded an American Film Institute, Life Achievement Award
- His vision of simplifying the way that dance sequences were shot, in full-figure with a minimum of edits and camera angles, made him a pioneer in the professional presentation of dance on film
