How did this start?
Word is that Sid Graumnan, (owner of the Egyptian Theatre down the street) during construction of his new Chinese Theater,
was with Norma Talmadge (Silent Movie Star), Mary Pickford, & Douglas Fairbanks (Silent Movie Stars who helped finance the Rosevelt Hotel and Grauman's Chinese Theatre) across the street at the also being constructed Rosevelt Hotel.
They all walked across Hollywood Blvd to look at the Chinese Theater progress and accidentally walked across almost dry concrete leaving footprints from the curb to the front door.
They signed their footprints by the curb with a nail kind of as a joke but Grauman got the idea. (Not sure who else if anybody was there: Constance Talmadge maybe?

Days later they did it officially (footprints were too faint) and Fairbanks and Pickford left their hand and footprints and signatures together in a concrete pad in the middle of the theatre's forecourt. There was no crowd or ceremony.

Next Norma Talmadge did her official slab for the Grauman's Chinese Theatre's Grand Opening. This was the first one with a ceremony. (A couple years earlier she did the theatre's groundbreaking ceremony also with a golden shovel in dirt January 5, 1926).
The Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford pads on display now are not the original formal slab. It may be that they each did a practice slab on April 30, 1927 along with the original formal slab? Or the big one got damaged and they redid them separately in the 30's? Fairbanks did not even date his and Pickford's only says 1927. The slabs on display now have been there since at least the 1940s.
