At first, the idea of Jimmy Durante singing love songs strikes you something, like Charles de Gaulle singing the score to "Mary Poppins." Unlikely. Hold on, friend. Let the idea grow. Recall Durante singing "September Song." Listen to this album. You'll discover still another Durante.. The Great Durante... the man who used to spend his evenings chopping up Steinways... now sings with wisdom and grace about evenings of love.

Durante should now be judged as kind of the Robert Frost of the music world. Jimmy brings to these songs the experience of full years. He sings with an insight that knows love can be both terrifying and "the only real thing." These years, these insights contribute to the beauty of Durante's love songs. "'ll Be Seeing You," "When Day Is Done," "If I Had You," "I'll See You In My Dreams".. all of these songs of love have never before sounded so wise, nor so worth the listening.

When you're at a Durante recording session, one of the strongest impressions that hits you is that of Jimmy as one of the world's Great Believers. It's not giving away any deep secret to admit that some singers glide through a song, worrying most about the beauties of intonation and royalties, and worrying little about the poetry. they're to transmit. But Durante, he's a poetry man. Jimmy believes those lyrics. He has to. If he can believe the lyrics of "Inka Dinka Doo" (and don't think for a moment he doesn't then when he gets to real poetry, the impact of the Great Believer is enormous. Take, for example, Herman Hupfeld's immortal "As Time Goes By." Durante puts more belief in it than you can find in 700 square yards of ecumenical council. When Dooley Wilson sang it to Ingrid Bergman in "Casablanca" ("Sam, I told ya. Never play that song again." -Bogart, 1942) it was sentimental. Jimmy turns it into a credo. One of the world's Great Believers.

Gordon Jenkins has been hankering to work with Jimmy Durante for years. The man who has left behind nonsense songs to sing what he knows...The New Durante... appeals to Jenkins. On this album, Jenkins (who also composed "Once To Every Heart") has lavished his most beautiful arranging style. The strings cascade, the one-finger piano searches along the melody line, and the Jenkins voices are crisp and full. Jenkins, like Durante, believes that music is a romantic art. He writes that way.

The final tune in "Jimmy Durante's Way Of Life" is "I'll See You In My Dreams." As the last notes close the album, Jimmy reaches deep into his heart. Once again, he bids farewell to that unknown woman whose name sounds like one part cabbage and two parts lamb stew. "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." Jimmy has never told at least publicly who Mrs. C. is. Guess it's none of our business. Unless, of course, Mrs. Calabash might be all of us
