Underwood Family Farms The Early Years
The Early Years
1867-1940

The County was founded on oil and farming. Oxnard grew from the sugar beet industry. Ventura County was the home of the lima bean. Oranges and lemons supported many local families. It is still the heart of the lemon industry. It took a lot of men and horses to till the fields in the old days. Many acres were needed just to feed the animals that did the work. The stationery bean threshers required 45 men. Today 3 men harvest many more sacks a day. The field crops of old have evolved to the orchards, vegetables, and berries today..
